WREK the Newsletter - February 2026

by Nova Ward

3/1/2026

Welcome to the first edition of our brand new "WREK the Newsletter"! From the radio station that brings you music you don’t hear on the radio, this monthly newsletter will include everything we do that you don't hear on air! WREK is home to dozens of specialty shows, countless operators, and several WREK sub teams that help keep our broadcast going 24/7. This newsletter is here to give you a special look into our day-to-day operations, upcoming events, and new exclusive content. You will soon be able to sign-up to receive this newsletter directly into your inbox (as soon as our Engineering team sets it up, lol). Future editions will also be available right here on wrek.org. Enjoy!

On February 3rd, WREK Exec tabled for the Winter Student Org Fair! This event allowed us to recruit new members and advertise our station to the Georgia Tech student body. We recruit students to train as "dummy operators" for one semester, where we show them how to run the WREK broadcast themselves. On top of that, we also recruit students for our various teams, including Engineering, Music Directing, Media, Design, Live Sound, and Wrektacular!

WREK Lobby Console Updates

The display monitors in the lobby of WREK have received an upgrade! Angela, WREK's IT Director, implemented a touch screen feature that allows the user to have either the main or HD2 stream play in the lobby with the tap of a button. A third button is in the works to allow users to connect their phone or laptop via Bluetooth and play their own music. Stop by our station in the student center and give it a try!

Upcoming Model/Actriz Interview

WREK’s Historian, Ayan, recently had the pleasure of interviewing a WREK-favorite, Model/Actriz. The NYC dance-punk act played at the Buckhead Theatre on February 24th during their Atlanta stop on their current tour. Ayan, with the help of a couple of other operators, met with half the band in a hotel lobby before their show to talk for almost an hour about their writing process, inspirations, favorite drag queens, and what’s to come. That interview is planned to premier on air soon, alongside a YouTube release and blogpost transcript!

Wrektacular 2026 Teaser & Date Announcement

WREK's annual music festival, Wrektacular, has been announced for April 11! You can view the official teaser announcement on our Instagram linked above. Our Wrektacular team has been hard work sourcing artists, making visuals, and event planning every aspect of our festival. While we haven't announced the lineup just yet, more festival details will be coming shortly. Keep an eye on our official WREK media channels! Want to get involved? Wrektacular meetings are Thursdays at 6:30 pm in the station and are open to all students!

Music Directing Updates

Music directing has been working to expand our new sound blocks, Vintage WREK (Sat 6am-1pm) featuring iconic albums that have inspired the college radio sound, Surround Sound (Sat 1pm-4pm) which features music by local artists, and Weekend Winddown (Sun 2am-7am &  10pm-12am) which features folk, acoustic, and singer songwriter genres. We are sorting through WREK archives to find what defines these blocks, and opening up the floor for new albums to add to the library, especially consolidating local artists for Surround Sound. We are working to categorize albums that fit into multiple genres to be played in different sound blocks to diversify the play time of our existing library. We are also working to tackle the “CD Graveyard” of broken and misplaced CDs to restore them to our library.

Introducing WREK's Media Team & WREK Blog

WREK now has a place for music journalism, photography and videography! We have long been wanting to collaborate with artists, do interviews, and communicate more about what we are doing in the station.  WREK Exec members Nova (Publicity Director) and Grace (Design Lead) are co-leading the new team. So far, we have a few writers, photographers, and videographers on board and several articles in progress! Our work will be visible on the WREK Blog. Look there for album reviews, concert reviews, WREK the Newsletter, and other WREK updates there. If you are a current student and are interested in joining, we meet Tuesdays at 6:30pm in Conference Room C3108 (3rd floor Student Center).

Programming Updates

This semester, WREK is welcoming a new Specialty Show: All the Fixin's. This show is part country music and part radio voice acting. You can tune in Mondays from 7pm to 8pm to listen!
