WREK The Newsletter - March 2026

by WREK

4/1/2026

Hi WREKers! March has left us, and spring is finally here (with a strawberry in its mouth, iykyk)! While WREK broadcasts quality, diverse programming 24/7, so much has been going on off air, too! WREK has been abuzz with festival planning, dj workshops, new shows, new music, and so much more. Scroll down to hear about everything you don't hear on the radio!

WREK Blog Launch

The beginning of March saw the launch of the WREK Blog, WREK's official web page for all things music, reviews, and interviews! We have a dedicated staff of writers, photographers, and editors, and engineers that have been working tirelessly to get it off the ground. You can read our first articles now!

Dummy OP Training Sessions

Early this month, WREK Exec hosted two training sessions to teach new and existing ops everything about operating our live broadcast. Keep an eye out for more sessions next semester!

Cootie Catcher at the Masquerade

On March 12, WREK put on a show at the Masquerade for Cootie Catcher, with support from local bands Hillview #73, mood room, and Strumbrush. You can read a recap of the show on our blog!

Live @ WREK - March 2026

Every Tuesday at 8pm, our Live Sound team meets to put on Live @ WREK, a weekly show where artists are brought into our station to perform live on-air!

This month saw L@W performances from Medieval Architecture (3/10), Max's Fable (3/17), and DJ umenu (3/31)! Didn't get the chance to tune in? Check out our YouTube channel, where we post high-quality recordings of our L@W sets!

WREK the Decks DJ Workshops

March saw the first few "WREK the Decks" workshops in the WREK station! Designed by WREK DJs for beginners, these workshops teach GT students the basics of live DJing with the goal of performing at the end of the semester! Interested in learning for yourself? There's four sessions remaining: April 4 at 7:30pm; and April 10, 17, and 25 at 5pm. Interested and seeing our DJs perform? Our end-of-semester rave will be April 29!

New In-Rotation

WREK's in-house Music Directing team gets sent a LOT of music each month. We get it through email, we get it through Instagram DMs, we even get it through physical mail in every format you could imagine. The job of our Music Directors is so sift through each and every piece of music to determine whether or not it's suitable for one of our regular rotation sound blocks. It then becomes the task of the newsletter editor to figure out the best of the best to include in this segment. For the month of March, we've chosen two albums we recommend that you check out!

Nothing's About to Happen to Me by Mitski - Every Mitski album that has every graced WREK's CD shelves get played almost every single day, and it appears NATHTM will be no exception. On the heels of the Tiktok virality of My Love Mine All Mine, it appears Mitski has gone mad. An expansion of Mitski's unique take on Americana, NATHTM demonstrates mastery of both her theatricality and her restraint.

Something We All Got by cootie catcher - Toronto-based cootie catcher stands out among the current indie landscape by doing something most current bands can't: being fun. The band leans into musical and vocal imperfections in ways that give their work a vibrant character, which was on full display during their recent concert at the Masquerade. Their blend of twee-pop sensibilities, indie songwriting, and electronic production touches create an album that feels simultaneously polished and playful.

New Specialty Show

Ever played Geoguessr, the game where you try to determine locations on a map based on Google Street View images? Imagine that in radio form! Our newest radio show, Pindrop, drops listeners into a different time and place, and encourages them to call in to guess! We spoke with showrunner and WREK Op, Jenna Guiher, about the premise:

"It’s up to you to decide if you’re in the U.K., Chile, Japan or somewhere else entirely, with each episode jumping all across the globe and creating a whole new challenge. Expect a mix of both familiar names as well as deep cuts, all tied together by the culture and context that formed them, revealing a truly global perspective on how the music of the world unites us."

You can tune into Pindrop each week on Sunday from 10pm to 11pm!

WREKTACULAR '26 on April 11

Every year, the WREK staff spends several months meeting weekly to organize our WREKTACULAR festival! Starting in late October, the WREKTACULAR team has been hard at work booking artists, designing visuals, planning event logistics, and all the other various tasks that comprise something as large as a music festival.

We are happy to announce that we now have the official lineup and venue for the festival! WREKTACULAR '26 will be held on April 11 at Variety Playhouse, with headliner Lunar Vacation and supporting acts by Shallowater, Full Body 2, and Joyer. The festival will also feature four locally-based openers: Hubble, Strumbrush, Siichaq, and Nico!. You can tickets online at axs.com, or in-person at the Variety Playhouse Box Office during business hours! Student discount tickets are available in-person only with a valid student ID.
