#sunday-special

In this edition of “The Sound of U,” we got the opportunity to interview one of the biggest artists to come out of UGA and Athens’ iconic indie scene in recent years, Wim Tapley. Wim is an indie pop/rock artist who blends his deep and often insightful lyrics and pop-leaning instrumentals with funky bass notes of the saxophone for something truly unique and entirely his own. He released his second studio album “Red Door” last year and a new single “Powder” just this last December. He is currently touring the Southeast, with his most recent stop being Terminal West in Atlanta on 2/15.

Wim talked with us about his start in music, his songwriting process, and how touring has been the last few months. He also got the chance to “take over” our playlist for the night, playing some of the tracks that have inspired him musically over the years (shoutout “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba, a great way to end the night). We were lucky to receive lots of local music recommendations, including what he thinks are Athens’ best up-and-coming artists and bands. It was so amazing to hear his insight into the music world and his advice for college artists and bands who are following their calling into music, just like he did.
