The first hour of today's Sunday Special is an interview with Jazzmeia Horn!
Jazzmeia Horn is an American jazz singer and songwriter from Dallas, Texas, now based in New York City. Widely regarded as a rising star in the modern jazz scene, she won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition in 2015 and has earned two Grammy nominations. Horn released her fourth studio album last month and is currently touring worldwide in support of it, with a performance at City Winery in Atlanta, GA, scheduled for Monday, November 11th. In addition to her musical achievements, she founded her own record label, Empress Legacy Records, and continues to inspire women everywhere as she forges her path toward jazz stardom.
It was such an honor to get to interview Jazzmeia! One of my favorite quotes from the show is "Once I got into jazz I just kept going... it became like a religion to me." To me this just shows how music becomes so central to ones life, and how the spirit of jazz is just as important as the act of it. Jazzmeia also gave amazing advice to aspiring college artists and musicians saying "grab life by the horns and ride that bull" and "be as eclectic as possible". As college students, this is so inspiring to remember, and seeing a woman like Jazzmeia achieve her dreams, who started like us as a student and is now CEO of her own label, it reminds us that anything is possible if you keep working for it.
