WREK the Newsletter: August + September 2026

by WREK

10/7/2026

Our hard-working WREK staff have been up and at it planning projects, shows, and community outreach events since the school year began. In August, we participated in the on-campus “Week of Welcome” for incoming students; in September, we collaborated with a local organization to help promote an indie local music festival and at the same time, threw our first show of the semester, which was a major success. However, all of the planning and hard work didn’t start when school did. Our executive team was working all summer communicating with bands, venues, media teams, etc. to make the past month and a half the success that it was. Thank you exec!

Keep reading to get more details on everything our beloved station has been involved in outside the station this year along with some of the newest additions to our library.

Week of Welcome

August 17-23

At the beginning of the semester, WREK welcomed new Georgia Tech students during "Week of Welcome" which took place August 17 through 23. Two of our DJs provided music for the Yellow Jacket Mega Mixer on Tech Green, an event where new students could connect, play games, and familiarize themselves with campus. The event ended with a dance party consisting of line dancing and dance circles thanks to our music selection. Later in the week, WREK hosted an open house event where members of our executive board gave prospective members a tour of the station and provided further insight into how to become an on-air operator or member of one of our sub-teams. Closing out the week, WREK DJ’d again at RATS Night in the library. This was another great opportunity we had to recruit new members and increase our visibility on campus. Overall, our members had so much fun participating in these events and enjoyed meeting new Georgia Tech students.

Mainline Music Festival

September 11-13

WREK was an official media partner for this year’s Mainline Music Fest, an Atlanta indie music festival that highlights the local talent that we have in our community. The festival is run by Mainline Press, an independent, woman-led organization that was “created to help restore the spirit of alternative press,” (mainlineatl.com). Our goal as Mainline’s partner was to give people consistent coverage of the 22 bands playing throughout the weekend at four different venues across the area. Most of our collaboration took place on Instagram, but the feat we are proudest of was our YouTube livestream of the evening show at Aisle 5 on Saturday. We were able to have a complete set up that captured an electric night of local music that could be streamed anywhere with an internet connection. For those who could not make it to the event, it was almost as if they were there with us, and better yet, the entire livestream recording is currently on our YouTube channel so that the night can be relived all over again. We want to say a big thank you to Mainline and Aja for having us and letting us be a part of this special weekend.

Check out our blog for a gallery of the bands that played at Aisle 5 along with a detailed recollection of the entire weekend.

WREK Presents: Robber Robber

September 14

Before embarking on tour as the opening act for Modest Mouse, the band Robber Robber headlined WREKs first show of the school year on September 14th in Home Park. The lineup also consisted of local Atlanta bands Fair Well, Sheath, and Tunnels. Members of our live sound team ran sound and lights for the show, while other WREK members ran doors and sold merchandise. The show had a great turnout and was a great opportunity to introduce new WREK members to the local music scene. Robber Robber gifted WREK a vinyl that is now in our rotation, so our listeners can now hear their music during our Rock, Rhythm, and Roll block.

Atlanta College Radio Picnic

September 27

On Sunday September 27, members of WREK met up with WMRE of Emory University and WRAS Album 88 of Georgia State University at Piedmont Park for the second annual Atlanta College Radio Picnic. People brought picnic blankets, frisbees, and lots of delicious food to be shared. Friends were made, social medias were exchanged, and plans were discussed for future Atlanta College Radio gatherings later in the year. We love our college radio community!
